Italy will deploy the SAMP-T air defense system to Konya Province, Turkey, as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) permanent defense plan aimed at strengthening the alliance's air defense capabilities, the country's Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday.

In its statement, the ministry said the Italian defense system would be deployed at the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in Konya.

"Within the scope of the NATO Permanent Defense Plan, one Italian SAMP-T Air Defense System will be deployed to the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in Konya to strengthen the alliance's air defense," the ministry said, as reported by Daily Sabah (17/6).

The deployment is intended to strengthen allied solidarity and increase collective security measures in the region, according to the statement.

SAMP-T (Sol-Air Moyenne Portée/Terrestre) is a next-generation medium and long-range air and missile defense system jointly developed by Italy and France.

The system is designed to counter a variety of air threats, including aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and tactical ballistic missiles.

The system uses the advanced Aster 15 and Aster 30 interceptor missiles, providing 360-degree air defense coverage. Considered the cornerstone of Italy's air defense network, the SAMP-T is mounted on a highly mobile wheeled platform, allowing for rapid deployment and operational readiness.

Equipped with a multifunction radar system such as the Arabel radar or the newer Kronos radar, this system can simultaneously track and attack multiple targets.

The system is also designed to maintain high effectiveness in an electronic warfare environment while protecting military units and critical infrastructure from air and missile threats.

It is known that Turkey is preparing to host the NATO Summit, 22 years after the historic summit of the bloc in Istanbul. Alliance leaders will meet in Ankara to focus on prevention, defense capabilities, and burden sharing as the alliance adapts to new geopolitical realities.
