JAKARTA - Indonesian products are currently in the right position to meet market needs in Japan, said Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan Maria Renata Hutagalung.
Indonesia is again present at the international business to business Interior Lifestyle Tokyo (ILT) 2026 exhibition, which will be held on June 10-12, 2026 at Tokyo Big Sight.
This exhibition is known as a major sourcing event for buyers/retailers, interior designers, architects, hotel and resort hospitality services, as well as Japanese importers and distributors looking for new products for the Land of the Rising Sun market.
"Indonesia is currently in the right position to meet the Japanese market's needs for sustainable, high-quality interior and lifestyle products, as well as having a strong social story and value," explained Deputy Ambassador Maria Renata Hutagalung when inaugurating the Indonesian Pavilion at ILT 2026, launching the statement of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, Friday (12/6).
"Not only showing the results of traditional-based creations, but also the use of natural raw materials that strengthen the concept of circular economy in the production process," he said.
Nine Indonesian business actors, joining the Indonesia booth designed as the Indonesian House gallery, have been selected through a series of selections from the Ministry of Trade in collaboration with the Indonesia Design and Development Center (IDDC).
This selection series is carried out by taking into account the concept of sustainable lifestyle product design, traceable, has a narrative (storytelling), is of high quality and meets the elements of hospitality.
The visitors who attended seemed interested in the variety of raw materials used, including teak wood, rattan, bamboo, banana leaves, ginkgo biloba and other natural materials. These natural elements are creatively produced into home decoration forms according to the tastes and trends of Japanese consumers.
"Before participating in the ILT 2026 exhibition, business actors conduct products pitching to assess product readiness. Including, following business matching with Japanese business actors as an initial exploration. This is done in the hope that they can be met and reach a trade agreement while participating in this exhibition," explained Tokyo Trade Attaché Merry Astrid Indriasari, accompanied by Head of ITPC Osaka Didit Akhdiat Suryo.
Through this exhibition, business actors can also explore opportunities for cooperation and collaboration between Indonesian and Japanese designs, in line with Japanese design trends that increasingly combine natural elements, craftsmanship, sustainability, and traditional materials with a contemporary approach.
It is known that Indonesian exports of furniture and home decoration products to Japan have reached around 135 million US dollars per year.
With Japan's increasing demand for sustainable products, natural materials, and high-quality craftsmanship, Indonesia has a great opportunity to increase its market share through wood furniture, rattan products, and environmentally friendly home decorations that are the main trends at the ILT 2026 exhibition.
