JAKARTA - Minister of Manpower (Menaker) Yassierli underlined the importance of skills, employment opportunities and fair protection for workers in the midst of the development of artificial intelligence (AI) at the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Minister of Home Affairs in his statement received in Jakarta, Tuesday, said that technological changes should not make workers fall behind.

Therefore, Indonesia places the strengthening of skills, job creation, and worker protection as an important agenda in facing the future of work.

"Technological changes should not make workers fall behind. Therefore, Indonesia is preparing skills, expanding employment opportunities, and strengthening worker protection so that the community still has a decent working future," said Yassierli.

According to him, this issue is important for the community because changes in the world of work have begun to affect the way people work, look for jobs, and survive in the labor market.

Young people, he continued, need work experience, school graduates need relevant training, while workers in the digital sector and at-risk sectors need stronger protection.

Furthermore, in the forum, the Minister of Home Affairs conveyed that under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto, strengthening the skills of future workers is a national priority.

One of them is carried out through the National Internship program for college graduates to gain work experience for six months with the support of a government allowance.

He said that the National Internship had reached 100,000 participants last year and the target had increased to 150,000 participants this year.

In addition, the Government is also implementing the National Vocational Training Program for high school and equivalent graduates with a target of 300,000 participants.

"These programs also provide equal opportunities for women, people with disabilities, and people from remote and border areas," said Yassierli.

He added that strengthening skills must also go hand in hand with job creation.

In addition to skills and job creation, Indonesia also places worker protection as an important part of the decent work agenda.

The Minister of Home Affairs conveyed the ratification instrument of ILO Convention No. 188 on Work in the Fishing Sector as Indonesia's commitment to decent work, health, and safety of workers, including fishing crew.

Indonesia has also made progress in the preparation of national policies for digital platform workers. He emphasized that the protection and welfare of platform workers are an important part of Indonesia's response to the development of the digital economy and changes in work patterns.

He also conveyed Indonesia's readiness to cooperate with the ILO and international partners, including in the development of vocational training curricula, training centers for people with disabilities, and strengthening for workers affected by job termination and groups at risk of being left behind.

In the context of decent work and global social justice, he reiterated Indonesia's solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Indonesia continues to support the ILO Emergency Response Programme to restore employment, livelihoods, and labour institutions in the occupied Arab territories.
