JAKARTA - Five European Union (EU) countries have signed a loan agreement in the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) weapons program.
"There are five member states that have signed loan agreements with the commission, namely Poland, Lithuania, Croatia, Romania, and Belgium," said European Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier on Friday (29/5) as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik.
He said Poland became the first EU country to receive disbursements through the SAFE program.
The country received the first payment of around 6.6 billion euros (around Rp137 trillion) or around 15 percent of the total allocation of 43.7 billion euros.
"Poland is the largest recipient of the SAFE program and the first member country to receive payments through this new instrument," he said.
SAFE is an EU mechanism that provides long-term low-interest loans to member states to strengthen military capabilities and strategic infrastructure, purchase weapons, and develop cyber and defense technologies.
