JAKARTA - Chinese authorities on Friday warned their citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo due to the Ebola virus disease outbreak.

The Central African country has reported nearly 1,000 suspected Ebola cases and more than 220 suspected deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the country, and advised those already in Congo and neighboring countries not to visit Ebola-affected areas, including Ituri Province and North Kivu, Anadolu (29/5) reported.

The warning also warns against contact with wild animals and patients suspected of being infected with Ebola.

Chinese citizens who experience symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or bleeding are urged to seek medical treatment immediately or contact the Chinese medical team for assistance.

The alert comes amid growing international concern over the spread of the highly contagious disease in parts of central Africa.

It is known that the cumulative number of suspected Ebola cases has reached 1,077, with 121 confirmed cases and 17 deaths since the outbreak was declared on May 15.

Meanwhile, the WHO has raised the alert level to "very high," and several neighboring countries of Congo have increased measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including restricting travel from Congo.
