JAKARTA - Foreign Minister (Menlu) Sugiono encourages the reform of the United Nations (UN) and the UN Security Council to be more relevant to the current situation amid increasing global challenges and international conflicts.
The statement was made by Foreign Minister Sugiono at the Open Debate of the United Nations Security Council, which was chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as the current President of the UN Security Council, in New York, United States, Tuesday (26/5).
"In simpler terms, we consider the relevance of the UN must be adjusted to the current situation. Because we are co-chairmen when it was founded, the situation was the post-World War 2 situation at that time," said Sugiono through a video statement received in Jakarta as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, May 27.
Sugiono assessed that many global changes in the past 80 years have not been fully responded to by the existing international system, including the emergence of various new conflict points in the world.
Indonesia also highlighted the limited representation of Global South countries in the UN Security Council and the use of the veto which is often considered to hinder the resolution of various international issues.
"And I think the message conveyed is also uniform for the UN, we don't want the UN to lose its relevance but we all want the UN to be stronger in dealing with the dynamics that occur globally. Because we also understand the new challenges in today's world continue to develop, including artificial intelligence, then environmental issues," continued Sugiono.
In the forum, he again emphasized support for Palestinian independence through a two-state solution and called the Palestinian issue a test of the credibility of the United Nations.
"The independence of the Palestinian people based on the two-state solution is something that must absolutely be achieved and for this of course the role of the United Nations, the role of the Security Council is something that is very instrumental in order to achieve this goal," said Sugiono.
Not only that, Indonesia also highlighted the importance of respecting international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to maintain stability and prevent the sea from being used as a conflict arena or a political pressure tool.
As an archipelago nation, Indonesia considers recognition of the archipelago and international maritime routes to be a strategic interest that must be maintained through a strong international system.
In addition, Sugiono asked for greater protection for UN peacekeepers after four Indonesian personnel who were part of the UNIFIL mission were reported to have fallen.
"Protection of peacekeepers is not something optional, but a duty," he said.
