SEMARANG - A joint SAR team found two teenage rowing athletes who drowned in the Laes River, Pemalang Regency, Central Java, dead after two days of search.

Head of the Semarang SAR Office Budiono said Alfi (16) and Alif (16), athletes of the Indonesian All-Indonesia Rowing Sports Association (Podsi) Pemalang Regency were reported to have drowned in the Laes River on Saturday (23/5).

He said two residents of Saradan Village, Pemalang Regency were reported to have drowned while practicing independently using a kayak boat on the Laes River.

The boat used to train the two teenagers, he said, was suspected to be the best due to the fast river currents.

"At the time of the incident, the water discharge was quite high and the river current was quite strong due to rain in the upstream area," he said as reported by ANTARA, Monday, May 25.

Alif's body was found about 400 meters from the first location reported missing, while Alfi's body was found after being carried away by the current about 2.5 km from the first location reported missing.

The two bodies of the victims were then taken to the Asharj Pemalang Hospital for autopsy before being handed over to the family.
