JAKARTA - Erika Guevara Rosas from Amnesty International considers Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu's hypocrisy to talk about the incompatibility of his country's values and norms in dealing with Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) activists by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

"While hundreds of activists [the fleet] illegally detained by Israel are on their way back to their countries, Palestinian prisoners must continue to endure unspeakable torture," the human rights lawyer wrote on her X account, @ErikaGuevaraR, Thursday, May 21.

Ben Gvir arrogantly uploaded a video recording of his bad treatment of GSF activists who were detained by military officers from the Israel Prison Service (IPS), resulting in worldwide condemnation. Netanyahu, who was afraid of his country's bad image abroad, then condemned Ben Gvir's actions.

"Israel's systematic use of administrative detention - holding Palestinians without charge or trial - is the cornerstone of its apartheid system. Torture and other ill-treatment of Palestinian detainees have been a cruel reality for decades and have only increased in the last three years," Guevara Rosas said.

According to him, more than 9,000 Palestinian men, women, and children are currently detained in Israeli prisons. He added that more than 1,000 are from Gaza and are victims of enforced disappearance or are detained without communication in military facilities and denied access to lawyers or contact with their families.

"And other human rights groups have continuously documented patterns of actions by Israeli authorities that commit torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment against Palestinians, including through denial of medicines, food, clothing and sleep, constant beatings, gagging and blindfolding, dog attacks, rape and other sexual violence, among other violations," Guevara Rosas added.

"In another double standard performance, third countries remain unmoved by repeated calls to act to end Israel's violations against Palestinian detainees. This must end," he continued.
