Green SM Taxi Driver Becomes a Suspect in a Fatal Train Collision in Bekasi

JAKARTA - The Satlantas of the Bekasi City Metro Police concluded that the driver of the Green SM taxi was negligent in a traffic accident at a railway crossing in East Bekasi involving an electric train (KRL) at the end of April.

"The cause of the KRL versus Green SM taxi traffic accident was due to the negligence of the driver," said Head of Traffic Police at the Bekasi City Metro Police, Kompol Gefri Agitia, as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, May 21.

Gefri said the case was handled based on a police report Number LP/B/1495/IV/2026/SPKT/SAT LANTAS/POLRES METRO BEKASI KOTA/POLDA METRO JAYA dated April 27, 2026.

He explained that based on the witness's statement, the Green SM taxi vehicle with the police number B-2864-SBX driven by the driver with the initials RR was traveling from Duren Jaya to Juanda Road.

"When they arrived at the scene, the vehicle suddenly stopped or the engine died in the middle of track 1. At the same time, the CLI-125.1212 train, which was controlled by the driver, was traveling from west to east until it collided," said Gefri.

As a result of the incident, the taxi vehicle was damaged.

In handling the case, investigators from the Gakkum Unit of the Sat Lantas of the Bekasi City Metro Police have carried out an investigation of the crime scene, asked witnesses for information, made a chronology of the incident, and examined a number of related parties.

Witnesses who have been questioned include the gatekeeper of the crossing, taxi drivers, KRL drivers, and expert witnesses.

Police said the taxi driver could be charged under Article 310 paragraph (1) of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transport.

The train accident that occurred on Monday (27/4) evening killed a total of 16 people and dozens of others were injured.

The incident was triggered by the strike of a Green SM taxi in the middle of a piece of crossing due to an electrical system failure. The car was then hit by the KRL that passed.

As a result of the first accident, one series of KRLs to Cikarang stopped in an emergency at Bekasi Timur Station.

In this stop position, the KRL series was actually hit from behind by the Argo Bromo Anggrek train.
