JAKARTA - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called for an end to the ceasefire violations in the Iranian conflict and urged the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, warning of worsening global economic consequences.

"It is very important to immediately restore freedom of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz, and to end all violations of the ceasefire and create conditions for a political solution to the conflict," Guterres said at a press conference in Tokyo, Anadolu (20/5) reported.

Guterres further warned that conflicts in the Middle East were fueling inflation and deepening the global cost-of-living crisis by driving up energy, raw materials and fertilizer prices.

He said "distrust and geopolitical divisions" were hindering effective solutions to global conflicts, warning that countries were "violating international law with impunity."

"Our world today is convulsed by conflict, climate chaos, and inequality," Guterres said.

"Military spending exceeds spending on aid, while cuts in funding have a devastating impact on the world's most vulnerable people," he said.

It is known that tensions remain high since the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28, which caused major disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping lane.

Although the ceasefire mediated by Pakistan came into effect on April 8, repeated violations and stalled negotiations have raised fears of a new escalation.

US President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire indefinitely while still imposing restrictions on ships sailing to or from Iranian ports through the strategic waterway.
