BOGOR - The Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) University will hold an international seminar to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Prof. Sajogyo on May 21-23, 2026. The activity is also combined with the launch of a number of books containing critical thinking of the figure known as the Father of Rural Sociology in Indonesia.
The author of the book, Prof. Sajogyo, and Head of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (PSP3) of IPB University, Ivanovich Agusta, said Prof. Sajogyo's thinking is still relevant to the current development dynamics, especially related to the lives of farmers and rural communities.
"The thoughts and ideas of Prof. Sajogyo about social relations among farmers in the context of family and small-scale agricultural reproduction are still 'match' with current developments," said Ivanovich Agusta in a press conference at IPB Dramaga, Bogor, Tuesday, May 19.
According to Ivanovich, Prof. Sajogyo is an academic figure who has a great influence on the development of sociology, agrarian issues, to poverty alleviation efforts in Indonesia. The late also served as Rector of IPB in the period 1965-1966.
"The important points regarding the profile, contributions, and legacy of Prof. Sajogyo's thinking are very relevant in the current world development through technology. The deceased thought about the nutrition of the food eaten, not how many plates were spent," he said.
He explained that Prof. Sajogyo was born with the name Sri Kusumo Kampto Utomo on May 21, 1926 in Karanganyar, Central Java, and died on March 17, 2012. His ideas about people's sovereignty over land, rural development, and community nutrition are considered to have a major influence on development policies in Indonesia.
Ivanovich also said Prof. Sajogyo married Pudjiwati Sajogyo who was also a professor of rural sociology at IPB. The house left by Prof. Sajogyo in the Malabar area, Central Bogor, Bogor City, which was once the birthplace of various ideas for village development, has now been donated to the Sajogyo Institute.
In the series of celebrations for the centenary of Sajogyo, the international seminar will be attended by around 90 participants from five continents. In addition to the seminar, the committee also prepared the launch of three books, including Sajogyo's Indonesian translation which can be accessed more widely by the public.
"In this series of events for a century of Sajogyo, there will also be a book by Sajogyo in Indonesian translation and direct access to the book. This activity is expected to expand the reach of readers, especially among farmers, rural communities, coastal communities, and young generations who have been far away from academic literature," he said.
To enliven the event, the committee also presented an exhibition of Prof. Sajogyo's intellectual journey in the form of photos and archives displayed in the IPB library corridor.
Ivanovich added that Prof. Sajogyo's contributions continued throughout his life, one of which was through the Family Nutrition Improvement Effort (UPGK) Program in 1973 which was considered successful because it was easy for the community to understand until the cadres in the field.
