Central Papua Police Chief Wacanakan Mitigation While Visiting 1 Victim of Shooting in Tembagapura District

JAKARTA - The Head of the Central Papua Regional Police (Kapolda) Brigadier General of Police Jeremias Rontini visited one of the victims of the shooting in the Tembagapura District a few days ago who is currently being treated at the Mitra Masyarakat Timika Hospital, Central Papua, Tuesday, May 12.

The Police Chief said that of the number of victims of the shooting incident in the Tembagapura District, currently there is one person still undergoing treatment, namely Femina Elas (Murib) who is being treated at the Lukas RSMM Hospital in Timika.

"Only one person is still being treated," said Rontini, quoted by Antara.

On that occasion, the Police Chief also provided compensation to the victim and hoped that his condition would soon recover.

The Police Chief expressed his concern about the condition of the people of Tembagapura District who were victims of the shooting on Thursday night, May 7, 2026.

He said that mitigation needed to be carried out so that there were no casualties among civilians later.

"In the future, maybe we need to mitigate that when there is such an incident, the community must be how. There needs to be more education to the community when working in emergency situations," said the former Irwasda of the Papua Police.

According to the Police Chief, all the victims during the incident which occurred in the gold slope area in the Wini area, Tembagapura, were working as miners.

Those who come from surrounding villages, such as Banti, Kimbeli and Opitawak, set up simple camps for temporary shelter while carrying out gold grain activities.

Meanwhile, the geographical conditions at the location are quite steep and can only be reached on foot from Mile 72.

The Police Chief hopes that in the future there will be collaboration with PT Freeport Indonesia to carry out mitigation for collectors in the face of emergency situations.

Previously, there were five victims of the shooting incident in Tembagapura who were undergoing treatment at the Timika RSMM.

The victims, namely Apelu Magai, Orince Newagelen, Iriance Wanimbo, Christian Magai, Femina Elas, and Hiskia Magai.

The shooting incident also resulted in the death of a teenage girl. The victim, named Nalince Wamang, was known to have just completed his education at SMK Petra Timika and was buried in Kwamki Narama Timika.

The victim's father, Pastor Anton Wamang, said his daughter informed him that she would go to Tembagapura to collect gold.

"Before leaving, he called me. Dad, I went to Tembagapura to pick up with the old man (uncle). I said it was okay, just go," said Anton.

However, only three days in Tembagapura, Anton received information that his daughter was a victim of stray bullets during a search carried out by security forces in the Kali Kabur area at night.
