JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that the government wants to strengthen the position of local fishermen so that they are no longer defeated by foreign ships in Indonesian waters.

Prabowo made the statement while reviewing the Red and White Fishermen Village (KNMP) in Gorontalo, Saturday, May 9.

"We don't want foreign ships to take fish in our sea. We want our people to take it," said Prabowo in front of fishermen and residents.

According to Prabowo, the government this year will build 1,582 fishing boats to be distributed to fishermen's cooperatives in various regions.

The ships that are prepared consist of small, medium, and large sizes. The government will also build a fishing village complete with supporting facilities such as ice factories, cold storage, and a special fishing SPBU.

Prabowo said that strengthening the fisheries sector was important because fishermen had a major role in national food security.

"Fishermen produce protein, produce fish. The world now needs protein very much," he said.

The government targets the construction and inauguration of 1,386 fishing villages this year. The program will continue with the construction of 1,000 fishing villages every year.

In his speech, Prabowo also admitted that fishermen have often been neglected.

"Fishermen are often forgotten by smart people in Jakarta. Now it's changing. The government will now pay attention to all fishermen and all farmers throughout Indonesia," he said.
