European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have reached an agreement to ban AI applications that produce explicit sexual content, the European Commission said.
"The European Commission welcomes today's political agreement between the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on simpler and innovation-friendly rules for artificial intelligence...," the Commission said, quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik, Friday, May 8.
"This agreement also strengthens protection for citizens. This agreement prohibits AI systems that produce explicit and intimate sexual content without consent or child sexual abuse material, such as AI 'nudification' applications," he said.
The steps are part of a package of amendments to the Digital Omnibus Law on Artificial Intelligence.
Among other things, these measures aim to establish clear deadlines for the implementation of rules for critical AI systems and simplify requirements for businesses using AI technology, the statement added.
The European Parliament and the Council must now formally approve the agreement, after which the amendments will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union. The amendments will come into force three days later.
