JAKARTA - French President Emmanuel Macron held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and offered a French-British plan to establish an international mission for security in the Strait of Hormuz.
"The multinational mission formed by France and the United Kingdom can help restore trust between ship owners and insurance companies," Macron wrote on X, as reported by Sputnik, Thursday, May 7.
"This mission, in essence, will be independent of the warring parties... I have invited the president of Iran to take advantage of this opportunity and intend to discuss this issue with President [US] [Donald] Trump," Macron wrote.
Restoring security in the Strait of Hormuz could help make progress in negotiations on nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, and regional situations, the French leader added.
Macron also called on all parties to immediately and unconditionally lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Previously, the French Ministry of Defense announced that the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier was heading to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden as part of a French-British effort to organize future missions to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Recent escalations related to Iran have led to a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the main route for the shipment of oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets, which has driven fuel prices higher.
