Pakistan hopes to host the second round of peace talks between the United States and Iran, which were postponed last week, to end the war between the two warring countries.

Two Pakistani government sources familiar with the mediation process told Anadolu, Islamabad conveyed the hope that the US and Iran could reach an initial agreement before President Donald Trump's visit to China scheduled for May 14-15.

"Considering the latest developments, Pakistan hopes that negotiations between the two parties will be able to continue next week to reach a negotiated settlement to the conflict in the Middle East," said an unnamed source quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, May 6.

The source referred to the temporary suspension of what Washington called "Operation Freedom", as well as the release of an Iranian ship that had previously been seized along with its crew this week.

"Almost 80 percent to 85 percent of the issues between the two sides have been resolved, but the core issue related to the nuclear program is still the main obstacle," the source added.

Previously, the US rejected Iran's proposal to postpone discussions on the nuclear program while including the Strait of Hormuz issue in the negotiations.

However, Washington insists that the nuclear program remains part of the talks leading to a permanent ceasefire.
