Reform in the Police Never Stops, President Requests Law Enforcement to be Evaluated

JAKARTA - Chairman of the National Police Reform Acceleration Commission Jimly Asshiddiqie said the President gave instructions that the reform should not stop at the National Police. Evaluation also needs to touch other law enforcement agencies, including the judicial power.

The statement was made by Jimly at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, May 5, after delivering the results of the recommendations for Polri reform.

"What we need to reform is not just the police," said Jimly.

According to Jimly, after 25 to 27 years of reform, law enforcement agencies also need evaluation. He said that improvement was not enough just by raising salaries, but it had to be comprehensive and integrated.

"The judicial power also needs to be reformed, not only by raising salaries, but also comprehensively and integrally," he said.

However, Jimly emphasized that the process began with the National Police first.

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that the National Police received a recommendation from the National Police Reform Acceleration Commission. He ensured that the recommendation would be immediately followed up.

"The National Police welcomes the results of the recommendations for police reform and will immediately follow up," said Listyo.

Listyo said a number of things would be discussed immediately, including strengthening Kompolnas and placing members of the National Police outside the structure. For the issue of placement outside the structure, the National Police will coordinate with the Coordinating Minister for Law and Human Rights.

The National Police Chief also said that the National Police had drafted a governance system for follow-up recommendations, ranging from short-, medium-, and long-term strategies.

According to Listyo, all of these proposals are considered important to make the Polri institution better.
