JAKARTA - The United States and the Gulf Arab countries are drafting a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution designed to condemn Iran for blocking the Strait of Hormuz in response to the US-Israeli bombing campaign, said US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz.
Ambassador Waltz said on Monday that negotiations on the resolution would take place this week.
He explained that the draft resolution was a "narrower effort" than the previous resolution that failed and emerged when the ceasefire took effect with Iran.
"This is much more focused on international waterborne mining and on the imposition of import duties, which affects all world economies, especially in Asia," he said.
The new draft plan comes after Russia and China, permanent members of the Security Council, blocked a resolution last month that Washington hoped would trigger an international effort to restore freedom of navigation in the waterway.
The resolution is expected to require Iran to stop attacks on merchant vessels and attempts to impose tariffs on shipping in the strait, and will demand that Iran stop placing sea mines and disclose the location of the mines.
Iran is known to have tightened control over the Strait of Hormuz due to the escalation in the Middle East, following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.
The US then imposed a blockade on ships to and from Iranian ports starting April 13.
