JAKARTA - Two members of the United States military who participated in the 2026 African Lion joint military exercise were reported missing near the city of Tan Tan in southern Morocco, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces said on Sunday.
US, Moroccan and other partners launched a coordinated search and rescue operation, including ground, air and maritime assets, to find the military member, who was lost near the Cap Draa training site, the two militaries said in separate statements.
The Moroccan army said the US military member was lost near a cliff.
"Initial reports indicate that the two soldiers may have fallen into the sea," a US defense official told Reuters via email, as reported by Al Arabiya (4/50).
"I can confirm that this incident is not related to terrorism," he said.
African Lion is the largest annual joint exercise of the US Africa Command, which aims to improve interoperability among US forces, NATO Allies, and African partner countries.
This year's joint exercise takes place from April 27 to May 8 in four countries, namely Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia.
Most of the exercises take place in Morocco and involve about 5,000 personnel from more than 40 countries.
