JAKARTA - House of Representatives (DPR) Chairwoman Puan Maharani expressed condolences to the victims of the long-distance train accident (KAJJ) with the KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. He asked the government and related stakeholders to improve the railway transportation safety system and elements.

"On behalf of myself and on behalf of the DPR RI, I express my deep sorrow for the victims of the train accident that occurred last night in the Bekasi area. We ask the Government, KAI, together with related stakeholders to prioritize safety issues on the railway line. The system and security on the railway line must be improved," said Puan Maharani, Tuesday, April 28.

"Especially on a piece of land crossing that we still find along the train crossing. Because the security is very lacking, train accidents often occur and this must be taken seriously," he added.

Puan views the train accident in the area of East Bekasi Station not only as a grief because of the loss of life and injuries, but also to put public transportation safety back as the main measure of public confidence in daily services used by millions of people.

"In urban mobility systems such as Jabodetabek, KAI Commuter Line or KRL, it is not just a mass transport mode, but a social infrastructure that supports the rhythm of work, education, and the daily economic activities of the community. Therefore, every major incident not only has an impact on the direct victims, but also has the potential to affect public perceptions of safety when using train transportation," explained Puan.

Puan assessed that the accident between the KRL and Argo Bromo Anggrek last night showed that the dense metropolitan line is now working at an increasingly higher level of complexity, ranging from increased travel frequency, the same type of track sharing service, and the tolerance space for interference is getting narrower.

"In this condition, safety is not enough to be seen as compliance with daily operational procedures, but must be present in the form of security standardization that can convince the public that every potential risk has been anticipated," he explained.

"After an incident like this, operators and the Government need to show that safety standards have been updated in a tangible, measurable, and understandable way," added Puan.

Puan also encouraged that the investigation into the accident should produce clear structural learning. "And the most important result of this evaluation is to ensure that people see using the KRL is still a safe, rational transportation option, supported by a safety system that continues to be strengthened," he concluded.

As is known, the incident of the commuter train with a long-distance train that occurred on Monday, April 27, at night began when an electric taxi was hit by a commuter train in the Bulak Kapal area because the taxi stopped in the middle of a piece of track. The taxi was in the area of the track before it was hit by the commuter train towards Jakarta.

This condition caused the KRL or commuter line from Jakarta to Cikarang to be disrupted and the series stopped on the track. Not far away, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train, which was coming from behind, hit the KRL which was stopping.

Due to the severity of the collision, the Argo BromoAnggrek train locomotive broke into the special women's car body at the back of the train. This incident caused 14 people to die and 84 others to be injured.
