JAKARTA - Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Wednesday that contacts were underway to extend the ceasefire with Israel agreed last week.
"Contacts are underway to extend the period of the ceasefire," President Aoun said during a meeting with a parliamentary committee, as quoted by a presidential statement, Anadolu reported (22/4).
"We will spare no effort to end the abnormal situation Lebanon is currently experiencing," he continued.
"In all contacts and consultations, the main goal is to maintain Lebanon's sovereignty over all its territory," President Aoun said.
The Lebanese president said the upcoming negotiations would focus on "completely ending the Israeli attacks, achieving Israel's withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the return of prisoners, the deployment of troops to international borders, and rebuilding what was destroyed during this war."
Previously, the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon met in Washington on April 14, their first meeting in 43 years, and agreed to begin direct peace negotiations.
According to Israel's Channel 15, the second round of talks between Israel and Lebanon will take place on Thursday in Washington, United States.
Since March 2, Israel has carried out attacks in Lebanon that have killed about 2,300 people, wounded more than 7,500, and displaced more than 1 million people, according to official figures.
The attacks subsided as a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon was announced by US President Donald Trump on April 17.
