JAKARTA - The United States imposed new sanctions targeting 14 individuals, companies and aircraft based in Iran, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for helping procure or transport weapons on behalf of the Iranian regime, the Treasury said on Tuesday.
"The Iranian regime must be held accountable for blackmailing the global energy market and indiscriminately targeting civilians with missiles and drones," said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, launching Al Arabiya (22/4).
"Under President Trump's leadership, as part of the Economic Fury, the Department of the Treasury will continue to track the flow of money and target the Iranian regime's recklessness and those who enable it," he continued.
The Ministry of Finance said the Iranian regime is trying to rebuild its production capacity after a drastic decline during the US-Israeli war in Iran.
The Ministry of Finance also said that Iran is increasingly relying on the Shahed series one-way attack drones to target the United States and its allies, including energy infrastructure in the region.
"The imposition of these sanctions supports Operation Economic Fury in response to the Iranian regime's continued threats to global security," the Treasury said in a statement.
The State Department said the sanctions against eight individuals and four entities were issued for their work in support of Iran's UAV and ballistic missile programs as well as Mahan Air, which has been designated by the US.
Two Mahan Air planes were also sanctioned for previously transporting personnel, weapons, equipment, and funds of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the State Department said.
