JAKARTA - The Taiwan Ministry of Defense said it had detected 24 aircraft and seven naval vessels of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) near the island over the past 24 hours.

"24 flights of PLA aircraft, 7 PLAN ships and 1 official ship operating around Taiwan were detected until 6 am (UTC+8) today [22:00 GMT, Tuesday]," the ministry said on X, Tuesday, April 21, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik.

Eleven of the 24 planes briefly crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone.

On Monday, the ministry said the PLA Navy's Liaoning aircraft carrier had also crossed the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan has had self-government since 1949, but Beijing considers the island part of its territory, while Taiwan - which has an elected government - calls itself an autonomous entity, although it has not officially declared independence.

Beijing also opposes any form of official contact between foreign countries and Taipei and considers China's sovereignty over the island to be non-negotiable.
