JAKARTA - South African politician Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison for firing a gun into the air during a party meeting.

Quoting Al Jazeera, the Afsel Court on Thursday, April 16, sentenced the leader of the left-wing opposition party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to be guilty of a gun shot case in front of his separatist colleagues.

Malema's actions took place in 2018, when his party held a mass meeting at a stadium in the Eastern Cape province.

Judge Twanet Olivier, who presided over the trial, said one of the famous politicians in West Africa was guilty, including illegal possession of firearms.

However, the leader of the fourth largest party in the Afsel parliament denied all accusations. The 45-year-old man argued that the weapon was a toy.

Malema's lawyers filed an appeal against the sentence minutes after the decision was read out in court in the city of KuGompo, formerly known as East London, today.

When the hearing was held, hundreds of EFF Malema supporters wearing red clothes gathered outside the court.
