President Trump Reiterates Tuesday Is Deadline to Reach Deal with Iran

JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the Tuesday deadline he had set for Iran to reach an agreement was final and would most likely not be extended, calling Iran's peace proposal significant but not good enough.

President Trump has warned US forces will launch a massive attack on Iranian infrastructure if a Tuesday night deadline for a deal is not met.

"They put forward a proposal, and it was a significant proposal. It was a significant step. It wasn't good enough," Trump told reporters during an Easter event for children on the south lawn of the White House, Al Arabiya reported from Reuters (7/4).

Previously, critics said President Trump would commit a war crime if the US attacked a civilian power plant, a point President Trump denied on Monday.

"I'm not worried about it. You know what a war crime is? Having nuclear weapons," President Trump said.

The Republican president said the five-week conflict could end quickly if Iran did "what they have to do."

"They have to do certain things. They know that, they have negotiated, I think in good faith," he said.

President Trump, who has extended his original deadline, has given no indication he will do so again.

"It's highly unlikely. They've had plenty of time. In fact, they asked for seven days. I said, I'll give you 10 days. But after 10 days, a big mess will happen if you don't reach an agreement," he explained.

It is known that senior officials of President Trump have negotiated with Iran indirectly through Pakistan, trying to get an agreement in which Iran will abandon nuclear weapons and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the oil transit route. Iran says they want a permanent end to the war, not just a temporary ceasefire.

President Trump said it appeared the latest team representing the Iranian government "was not as radicalized" as other teams that have been killed in airstrikes.

"We think they're actually smarter," he said.

Trump said that if it were up to him, the United States would take control of Iranian oil, but he said the American people might not understand the move.
