JAKARTA - The Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI) expressed full support for the implementation of PP Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP TUNAS). This policy requires the deactivation of social media accounts for children under the age of 16 starting March 28, 2026.

This strategic step is strengthened by the Minister of Communication and Digital Regulation Number 9 of 2026. The rules target nine major platforms, namely:

YouTube & TikTokFacebook, Instagram, & ThreadsX (Twitter) & Bigo LiveRoblox

Why is 16 years the minimum age?

The Chairman of the IDAI Central Board, Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, Sp.A(K), explained that this restriction is a crucial medical step. Neurologically and psychologically, children under 16 years of age are considered to not have the cognitive maturity to filter information and manage risks in cyberspace.

"PP TUNAS is a protective fence on the edge of the abyss. This is not to lock children up, but a form of collective responsibility to prepare them so that they do not fall before they are strong enough," said Dr. Piprim.

IDAI also reminded the golden rule of screentime:

0-2 Years: Prohibited from using the device at all (crucial period of brain growth). Above 2 Years: Real sensory stimulation and two-way interaction cannot be replaced by a screen.

Negative Impact of Social Media on Child Development

According to IDAI, excessive exposure to social media without mental readiness can trigger various disorders, including:

Digital addiction. Mental and emotional health disorders. Decreased ability to socialize in the real world. Developmental disorders in the first 1,000 days of life.

Parent and Government Synergy: The Key to Success

DR dr. Fitri Hartanto, Sp.A(K), Chairman of the IDAI Social Pediatric Growth and Development UKK, emphasized that this regulation will not be optimal without the active role of parents.

"This policy is the foundation for parents to carry out their role better. Children need a figure to talk to in the real world, not just an escape into the virtual world," said Dr. Fitri.

He suggested that after this restriction, parents provide alternative space for children, such as:

Physical activity and sports. Offline creative expression space. Open communication between children and parents (digital parenting).

Indonesia Becomes a Pioneer in Protecting Children's Digital

With a population of children under 16 years old reaching 70 million, Indonesia is the first large-scale non-Western country to implement this progressive policy. The implementation of the first phase which started today marks a new era of digital parenting in Indonesia to realize a Golden Generation that is physically and mentally healthy.
