JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that the government would investigate the landslide of garbage mounds in Zone IV of the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST), Bekasi City, West Java. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, March 8, killed seven people.

Hanif said the Ministry of Environment and Forestry had carried out an investigation of the scene of the crime (TKP) to trace the cause of the landslide that caused casualties.

"So, yesterday we conducted a crime scene investigation for this humanitarian disaster with the death of seven of our residents," said Hanif in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, Wednesday, March 11.

According to Hanif, the incident was not only seen as a disaster, but also would be traced from the aspect of legal responsibility. He said that the management of TPST Bantargebang had obligations regulated in a number of regulations related to environmental and waste management.

"This is in accordance with Law 32 of 2009, which has legal responsibilities that must be borne by the operator. Also in Law 18 of 2008 there is also a legal responsibility that must be handled," he said.

Hanif said the investigation process was being accelerated to determine who was responsible for the incident. The determination of the suspect is said to be carried out after the series of examinations and collection of evidence is completed.

"Hopefully in the next few weeks there will be suspects who have been determined in order to provide a basis for justice for all of us, and also make a learning point in the process of handling garbage," he said.

The Ministry of Environment also assisted the police as law enforcement officers in carrying out crime scene investigation and data collection in the field. This step is taken to ensure that the investigation process runs according to procedures.

Hanif also touched on the practice of open dumping or open dumping which has actually been prohibited in the national waste management regulation.

"Actually, then this examination will lead to all officials who are then responsible since the law was enacted," said Hanif.

He explained that Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management actually gave a time limit of five years since the regulation was enacted to end the practice of open dumping at landfills.
