JEMBER - Mount Semeru, which has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level (msl), erupted accompanied by a hot cloud discharge (APG) on Saturday.

"There was an eruption of Mount Semeru on March 7, 2026 at 10.20 WIB, but the height of the ash column was not observed," said Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer, Sigit Rian Alfian in a written report reported by ANTARA, Saturday, March 7.

According to him, the eruption of the mountain, which is on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, East Java, was recorded in the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 12 mm and a duration of approximately 4 minutes 35 seconds.

"The eruption in the form of a hot cloud with a glide distance is unknown because the mountain is covered with fog. It is directed to the southeast (Besuk Kobokan)," he said.

Based on the officers' records, Mount Semeru experienced nine eruptions on Saturday with the first eruption occurring at 00.23 WIB and the ninth eruption occurring at 10.20 WIB accompanied by a hot cloud slide.

Sigit explained that currently Mount Semeru is at Level III Status (Alert) with a recommendation not to carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 km from the peak (center of the eruption).

"Outside this distance, the public does not carry out activities at a distance of 500 meters from the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because they have the potential to be hit by the expansion of the hot cloud and lava flow up to a distance of 17 km from the peak," he said.

He also appealed to the public not to carry out activities within a radius of 5 km from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because they are prone to the danger of stone throwing (pijar).

The public also needs to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava ejection, and lahar along the river/valley streams upstream of the Semeru Volcano peak, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lahar in small rivers which are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
