JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto has received support from a number of Middle Eastern countries and other Islamic countries regarding Indonesia's efforts to take a role as a mediator in easing tensions between the United States and Iran.

Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/Head of the National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) Nusron Wahid said President Prabowo wants a meeting room between the two parties to encourage the resolution of conflicts through diplomacy.

"The principle is that the President wants a meeting with the United States with Iran to mediate and Iran opens up," said Nusron at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Thursday, March 5 evening.

According to Nusron, the diplomatic steps initiated by the President received support from a number of leaders in the Middle East region as well as other Islamic countries.

He said the support came from several countries, including Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

Even so, Nusron emphasized that a more detailed explanation of the diplomatic steps was the authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"Of course this is the territory of the Minister of Foreign Affairs who has the right to explain. But earlier the President's efforts to get support from other leaders of other countries in the Middle East were explained," said Nusron.

Nusron said that the President along with a number of other leaders of the eight-nation group (D-8) had the same desire to encourage the creation of peace in the region.

According to him, the leaders agreed that the conflict should not drag on, especially those that have the potential to trigger wider tensions in Iran and the Gulf region.

"Mr. President together with the seven leaders of the countries that are members of the 8 group, want peace. Do not let the war drag on, especially in Iran and in the Gulf region and so on," he added.
