JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra emphasized that the implementation of the parliamentary threshold needs to be studied rationally and comprehensively.

Yusril assessed that the parliamentary threshold in the general election system (pemilu) is an open political choice in the democratic system.

"Democracy is a complicated and verbose situation, but there is no better system than democracy. Soalthreshold, it is an open political choice," said Yusril as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, March 4.

The Coordinating Minister did not deny that democracy is indeed a complicated system and often takes a long time, but until now there is no better system than democracy.

Therefore, Yusril said that the use of the parliamentary threshold in the election was a political policy that was open to debate and evaluation.

According to him, the existence of a threshold is not automatically related to the stability of the government. He even assessed that conceptually, the parliamentary threshold is not absolutely necessary and is not always proportional to the effectiveness of the government system.

"Actually, the threshold has nothing to do directly with government stability. Political compromise is what guarantees stability, not just the parliamentary threshold," he said.

Yusril said that until now there were hundreds of political parties registered at the Ministry of Law, so that the simplification of political parties cannot be solely used as an excuse to justify the existence of the threshold.

According to him, the debate regarding the threshold for the parliament is still ongoing and needs to be based on clear rationality.

"There must be rationality regarding how many parliamentary thresholds can really guarantee government stability and the effectiveness of parliamentary work," said the Coordinating Minister.

The former Minister of State Secretary also touched on the current political dynamics showing the absence of a clear dichotomy between the opposition party and the ruling party, so that stability is determined more by compromise and political consensus than by technical design of thresholds.
