JAKARTA - The Mayor of Bandung Muhammad Farhan said that the Waste Sorting and Processing Officer (Gaslah) program that is present in every neighborhood (RW) is designed to raise awareness and change people's behavior towards garbage.

"Every morning, officers will knock on the door of residents' houses to ensure that the garbage has been sorted. Organic waste will be taken and processed at the processing points that have been determined at the village level," said Farhan as reported by ANTARA, Sunday, March 1.

He emphasized that the waste problem cannot be solved only by transportation and payment of tolls, but requires a change in mindset and shared responsibility of the community.

According to him, since January 14, 2026, Bandung has been declared in a state of emergency for waste and is under the direct supervision of the central government.

"Bandung is a city of construction. This means that we are directly supervised. The question is, what have we done? Are we really seeing garbage as a common problem," he said.

Farhan said that Bandung City is currently in the status of a central government-sponsored city in waste management.

According to him, the key to solving the waste problem lies in changing the mindset of residents, from just paying for the waste to be transported to being responsible from home.

"Because the garbage in Bandung City comes from ourselves, then we have to be responsible," he said.

He explained that the total production of Bandung City waste reached around 1,500 tons per day. With restrictions on the Sarimukti landfill, about 500 tons of waste must be handled independently within the city.
