MATARAM - The Mount Rinjani National Park Office (TNGR) stated that the reopening of Mount Rinjani climbing on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, will begin on March 28, 2026 after being temporarily closed due to extreme weather conditions.
"The plan to open the climb is on March 28, 2026," said Head of the TNGR Office Budhy Kurniawan in a statement quoted by Antara, Tuesday, February 24.
Budhy said his party had increased the aspects of safety, conservation, and management of destinations more inclusively by involving local governments and the community since the policy of closing the climb on January 1, 2026.
According to him, the reopening of the climbing route was carried out after a thorough evaluation of the condition of the area, supporting facilities, and the readiness of human resources in facing the tourist visit season.
The TNGR Office has implemented a safer, modern, and global standard system through the implementation of RFID bracelet activation, personal bacon monitoring the position of climbers, the construction of a command center, radio communication integration, and the implementation of zero waste digitally.
The Governor of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Lalu Muhamad Iqbal emphasized that the provincial government fully supports the opening of Mount Rinjani climbing by encouraging more collaborative management of the area and not going it alone.
"The direction of management of Mount Rinjani is not towards mass tourism, but rather exclusive, quality, and conservation-oriented climbing. World-class experiences must go hand in hand with ecosystem protection," he said.
Furthermore, Iqbal encouraged the strengthening of coordination between the management of the TNGR Center, the provincial government, the district government, and the surrounding residents, especially in terms of climbing safety, environmental conservation, and the management of world-class tourist destinations.
He gave an example of handling tourist accidents some time ago which required cross-party cooperation, including the vertical rescue initiative carried out by various stakeholders as a form of shared responsibility in managing Mount Rinjani tourism.
"Mount Rinjani is a symbol of community life. We hope that the innovation of the TNGR Office in environmental and tourism management will be realized soon," said Iqbal.
Throughout 2025, the nominal Non-Tax State Revenues (PNBP) from the Mount Rinjani tourism area reached IDR 25.92 billion and a total cash turnover of IDR 182.05 billion.
The number of climbing tourism visits was recorded as 80,214 people consisting of 43,236 foreign tourists and 36,978 domestic tourists.
Meanwhile, the number of non-climbing tourist visits reached 52,108 people consisting of 51,311 domestic tourists and 797 foreign tourists.
