JAKARTA - Middle East observer from the University of Indonesia Muhammad Syaroni Rofii assessed that Indonesia needs to pay attention to diplomatic efforts related to the nuclear issue between Iran and the United States (US), which has begun to show positive developments.

"The Iran-US nuclear issue seems to be finding a common ground with the facilitation of talks mediated by Oman. That means, for some time, a military crisis can be prevented and a potential military attack by the US is not the main option," said Syaroni as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, February 21.

Syaroni argues that conflicts or tensions involving key countries such as Iran still have the potential to have a wide impact, including on Indonesia.

"Iran is one of the main strategic routes for global oil supplies from the Middle East to the United States, Europe, and Asia, especially through the Strait of Hormuz," he said.

He explained that previous experience had shown that increased tensions in the region could disrupt global shipping and oil distribution, which ultimately triggered a spike in global energy prices.

"Last year we could see how the US attack on Iran stopped the Strait of Hormuz," he said.

For Indonesia, he continued, the situation in the Middle East has direct implications because some of the country's oil and gas imports still depend on supplies from the region.

"If there is a disruption in supply, prices will increase and have the potential to provide additional pressure on the Indonesian state budget," he said.

Therefore, even though the current Iran-US diplomacy is considered to bring fresh air for regional stability, the Indonesian government still needs to pay attention to global geopolitical developments and prepare anticipatory steps to maintain energy resilience.
