JAKARTA - French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot criticized the European Commission for participating in a meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington and urged it to respect European law.
Previously, Politico reported that the European Commission's decision to send its representatives to the first meeting of the Peace and Security Council without the consent of the EU had caused irritation among a number of member countries, including France and Belgium.
"The European Commission should never have participated in today's Board of Peace meeting in Washington without a mandate from the Council of the European Union. Regardless of the legitimate political questions regarding the Board of Peace, the European Commission must fully respect European law and the institutional balance in all situations," Barrot wrote on the X platform, as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Friday, February 20.
On the same day, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux said France was surprised by the European Commission's participation without an EU mandate. He stressed that the Commission must provide an explanation for the decision.
Previously, the Peace Council held its first meeting in Washington, bringing together more than 20 countries represented at various levels.
The organization was formed in January at the initiative of US President Donald Trump, who invited about 50 countries to join.
