JAKARTA - Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations warned that Iran would respond "firmly and proportionately" to any military aggression, stressing that the US would bear "full and direct responsibility" for the consequences.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly stated at the highest level that it is not seeking tension or war and will not initiate any war," the letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the presidency of the UN Security Council said, quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu.

"However, if Iran is the target of military aggression, we will respond decisively and proportionately in exercising its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter," the letter continued.

The Iranian representative warned that "all enemy bases, facilities, and assets in the region will be legitimate targets in the context of Iran's defensive response," stressing that "the United States will bear full and immediate responsibility for the unpredictable and uncontrollable consequences."

The letter cited a February 18 social media post by US President Donald Trump that was considered an "explicit public threat of force" against Iran, referring to the potential use of military facilities on Diego Garcia and the RAF Fairford base in the UK.

Iran urged immediate action by the UN through the letter, saying: "The Security Council and the Secretary-General must act without delay, before it is too late."

Iran described the US threat as a signal of "the real risk of military aggression, the impact of which will bring disaster to the region and is a serious threat to international peace and security."

Underlining its commitment to the diplomatic track, Iran's mission to the United Nations expressed full support for the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and diplomatic solutions, and confirmed that it had engaged constructively, seriously, and in good faith in nuclear negotiations with the Government of the United States.
