JAKARTA - At least 30 people were killed and seven villages were damaged in a Lakurawa militant group attack on Kebbi state, northwest Nigeria.

The attack targeted villages in Bui district, northern Arewa region, Kebbi around 13.15 on Wednesday local time.

Kebbi state police spokesman Bashir Usman said the militants had killed "more than 30 villagers."

"Dozens of people were killed when residents from Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago moved to fight the attackers," Usman said, quoted by AFP, Friday, February 20.

The attackers also stole "several livestock" in the attack. Police, soldiers, and local militias were immediately sent to the area.

The attack comes days after Kebbi hosted the UNESCO-listed Argungu fishing festival.

The Lakurawa militant group has been accused of being responsible for many attacks on communities in the northern part of the state and its neighboring Sokoto state.

Members of this group are known to carry out deadly attacks from their bases in the jungle, stealing livestock and collecting "taxes" from local residents.
