JAKARTA - The United States (US) military has withdrawn troops from the al-Tanf base in southern Syria after nearly a decade.

"US forces remain ready to respond to any ISIS threat that emerges in the region, while supporting the efforts led by partners to prevent the re-emergence of the terrorist network," said US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Admiral Brad Cooper, quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, February 13.

"Maintaining pressure on ISIS is essential to protect the homeland and strengthen regional security," he continued.

CENTCOM said the withdrawal from al-Tanf Garrison was completed on February 11 as part of a "deliberate and condition-based transition" under the Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), which was formed in 2014 to combat the ISIS terrorist group.

A Syrian government source told the Anadolu news agency on Wednesday (11/2) that the Syrian government had taken over the strategic base located at the intersection of the Iraqi and Jordanian borders after the withdrawal of US forces. Syrian Army units were reportedly deployed to the location.

The US previously used the al-Tanf base, which was expanded in 2017 and 2018, as well as surveillance balloons deployed there, to monitor the military activities of Iranian-backed groups and the ISIS terrorist organization in an area along hundreds of kilometers between the Jordanian border and the Euphrates River.
