JAKARTA - US Vice President JD Vance said US President Donald Trump wants Iran to guarantee it does not have nuclear weapons, and is considering various options for dealing with Tehran.
"The president has told his entire senior team we have to try to reach an agreement that ensures Iran does not have nuclear weapons," Vance told reporters before leaving Azerbaijan, as reported by Sputnik, Wednesday, February 11.
"However, if we can't reach that agreement, then there are other options available. So I think the president will continue to maintain his options," he continued.
Earlier on Tuesday (10/2), Trump said he was considering the possibility of deploying a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East in preparation for a possible failure of negotiations with Iran.
Vance said the US is now focused on the issue of nuclear weapons, not on regime change in Iran.
"If the Iranian people want to overthrow the regime, it's up to the Iranian people. What is our focus at this time is the fact that Iran must not have nuclear weapons. It has been the focus of the president's policy, even since the first administration," Vance said when asked a related question.
On February 6, talks between the US and Iranian delegations on Iran's nuclear program were held in the capital of Oman, Muscat. Trump said the talks went well.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday (8/2) stated that Tehran insisted on its right to enrich uranium, even if this potentially triggered a war.
