JAKARTA - The British government has been criticized for no longer using the phrase 'His Majesty's Government' or 'His Majesty's Government' in official and formal channels of communication to the public.

The criticism came from a number of Conservative opposition politicians on Tuesday local time, who considered the removal of the phrase a form of "disrespect for British history, culture, and constitutional order."

"It is typical that the Labour Party is trying to quietly remove the tradition," Conservative Party politician Alex Burghart was quoted as saying by AFP, Wednesday, February 11.

The British government is formally referred to as "His Majesty's Government" or "HM Government" referring to King Charles III as the current head of the British monarchy.

However, recently the British Government officially imposed websites and other communication channels to be only 'UK Government or British Government' eliminating the phrase 'HM Government'.

When Britain is led by a Tory or Conservative Party Government until 2024, the use of the phrase 'HM Government' is preserved, particularly in official channels using the main logo of the Royal Coat of Arms.

The Daily Telegraph reported that anti-monarchist activist and a spokesperson for the British Prime Minister's Government Keir Starmer, Graham Smith, said the move to remove the phrase 'HM Government' was right.

"This is the right move and reflects their true goal - to serve the people, not the powerful," said Smith, who heads the Republic's pressure group.

Smith stressed that the level of support for the monarchy had declined since the name of the former prince, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was dragged into the sex predator file Jeffrey Epstein, which was released by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) last month. The case is also considered to have plunged the British royal family into a new crisis.

Based on the Savanta poll by Republic released on Monday, February 9, support for the monarchy was at 45 percent, down 57-59 percent from the YouGov survey in mid-January 2026.
