JAKARTA - The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, granted amnesty to more than 2,000 prisoners in Iran on Tuesday, February 10.

Iran's judiciary revealed that of the thousands of people who received amnesty, none of the prisoners came from the anti-government demonstration case that led to riots recently.

Khamenei has routinely granted amnesties in the years leading up to the anniversary of the Islamic revolution and other important events in Iran.

"The leader of the Islamic revolution approved the request of the head of the judiciary to pardon or reduce or mitigate the sentences of 2,108 convicts," Iran's Chief Justice Ali Mozaffari said on the Mizan Online website, quoted by AFP.

"The list does not include the defendants and convicts from the recent riots," he continued.

Peaceful demonstrations protesting the rise in the cost of living took place in Iran at the end of December 2025, leading to anti-government actions whose riots peaked on January 8-9, 2026.

Iran claims more than 3,000 people have died during the unrest, including members of the security forces and innocent civilians.

International organizations estimate the number of victims to be much higher.

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said the number of deaths from the demonstrations reached 6,964 people, most of whom were demonstrators.

Iranian authorities confirmed that the initially peaceful demonstrations turned into riots due to foreign interference involving murder and vandalism.

In early February 2026, Iranian authorities arrested 139 foreign nationals (WNA) on charges of being provocateurs of anti-government demonstrations that took place throughout the Islamic Republic in late December 2025 to early January 2026.

Of the hundreds arrested, some had contacts with networks outside Iran when the demonstrations took place.

"The suspects are suspected of playing a role in planning, triggering, and directing the riot, and some of them have contacts with networks outside Iran," said the Iranian security statement quoted by the Tasnim news agency.
