JAKARTA - The Ambassador (Dubes) of Norway to Jordan and Iraq, Mona Juul, resigned after her name was included in the latest documents of the late convicted US sex predator, Jeffrey Epstein.
"This is the right and necessary decision... Juul's contact with the convicted criminal, Epstein, has shown a serious error of judgment," Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said in a statement quoted by AFP.
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mona Juul, among several prominent Norwegians dragged into the Epstein documents, had played a key role in secret Israeli-Palestinian negotiations that led to the Oslo Accords in the early 1990s.
According to Norwegian media, Epstein in his will left USD10 million to Juul's two children from his marriage to his husband who is also a diplomat and mediator of the Oslo negotiations, Terje Rod-Larsen,
Eide said the ministry would continue to hold talks with Juul during the review to determine the extent of their relationship.
"It is important to understand the scope of contact he, as an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had with Epstein," he said.
He added that for the time being the Jordanian Embassy would be led by the deputy ambassador until a new envoy was appointed.
Many political circles and the Kingdom of Norway were dragged into the case of the convicted US sex predator, Jeffrey Epstein, who died in the early 1990s in prison.
The figures include World Economic Forum CEO Borge Brende, and former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland, who is under investigation for "serious corruption."
Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit is also under scrutiny for her ties to Epstein. Marit said last Friday "deeply regret" it.
