Bandung City Trembled by M 2.9 Earthquake, BMKG: Local Fault Activity Active

JAKARTA - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude (M) 2.9 magnitude shook the Bandung City area, West Java on Friday afternoon at around 13.45 WIB due to active fault activity.

Head of the BMKG Bandung Geophysical Station, Teguh Rahayu, said the results of the BMKG analysis showed that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 6.86 LS and 107.74 BT, or precisely located in Bandung City at a depth of 5 kilometers.

"By taking into account the epicenter location and the hypocenter depth, the earthquake that occurred is a shallow earthquake type due to the active fault activity of the local area," said Teguh in a statement received in Bandung, quoted by Antara.

Based on reports from the community, he said, the earthquake was felt in Bandung City with an intensity scale of II to III MMI (Tremors felt by several people, light objects that are hung are swaying, felt real in the house, felt the vibration as if there was a truck passing).

However, until now there have been no reports of building damage as a result of the earthquake.

Until 14.03 WIB, he continued, the results of BMKG monitoring showed that there had been no subsequent earthquakes.

To the public, it is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be verified.

Teguh reminded the public to ensure that official information only comes from BMKG which is disseminated through verified official communication channels.

BMKG urges the public to remain calm and prepare preparedness steps such as ensuring buildings are earthquake-resistant, preparing disaster standby bags, and practicing to protect themselves during earthquakes.

"Strengthen disaster mitigation both structurally and culturally and conduct massive education regarding the potential of earthquakes and their impacts and mitigation," he said.
