JAKARTA - US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the United States would continue to be embroiled in controversy over the file of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein until all related documents were released in full.
"America will not move on from the Epstein case until it gets the whole truth, the full truth about the Epstein case," Schumer said in a speech in the Senate, Wednesday, February 4, as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu.
He also alluded to President Donald Trump's promise to open all documents transparently.
"America will not move forward until Donald Trump does what he promised, which is full transparency, and we're not even close to that," Schumer said.
The statement came a day after Trump said the United States should "move on" following the latest release of Epstein documents, while accusing Epstein and others of conspiring against him.
Schumer said millions of documents related to Epstein are still "cloaked in darkness," raising questions about what information has not been made public.
"We don't know what's left in it, what's there about Donald Trump," he said.
He also questioned whether the Justice Department was deliberately hiding documents that could potentially hurt Trump.
"The Department of Justice prioritizes Trump's interests over transparency and legal obligations," Schumer said, assessing that the institution did not have independence under the president.
"Trump chose people in the Department of Justice to be his own attack dogs, his own puppets. They have no independence, so we don't trust them," Schumer said.
He stressed that the issue would not subside until Trump released all the remaining documents related to Epstein.
A fresh batch of documents related to Epstein released by the Justice Department last week named a number of prominent figures.
Epstein was found dead in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on child prostitution charges.
He previously pleaded guilty in a Florida state court and was sentenced in 2008 for recruiting minors for prostitution, but the verdict was considered by many as a "special deal."
The victims accused Epstein of operating a vast prostitution ring involving wealthy elites and politicians.
