Tectonic Earthquake in Bener Meriah Aceh Due to Active Fault Activity

MEDAN - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 in Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh Province, which occurred on Tuesday, at 05:38:34 WIB, due to active fault activity.

Head of the Regional MKG Headquarters I Hendro Nugroho, said that the results of the BMKG analysis showed that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 4.92° LU and 96.78° BT, or precisely located on land at a distance of 23 km northwest of Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh at a depth of 10 km.

By considering the epicenter location and hypocenter depth, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow earthquake type due to active fault activity.

Based on reports from the community, the earthquake was felt in Bener Meriah and Central Aceh with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI (During the day it was felt by many people in the house, outside by some people, pottery broke, windows/doors creaked and walls rang).

In the Bireuen area with an intensity scale of II MMI (Tremors felt by some people, light objects hanging are swaying).

However, until now there have been no reports of building damage as a result of the earthquake.

Until 06.03 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring showed that there had been no subsequent earthquakes.

The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be verified.
