JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said he was against moving the United Nations (UN) headquarters from New York, following media reports on the international body's financial problems.

"I think it's not right. The UN will not leave New York, and will not leave the United States, because the UN has tremendous potential," President Trump told Politico, as reported by TASS (2/2).

That was conveyed by President Trump commenting on a report by The New York Times which said senior UN officials warned that the agency could be forced to reduce its operations, or even close its headquarters in New York, due to financial problems.

"When I'm no longer around to finish the war, the United Nations can do it," President Trump said.

"The UN has tremendous potential. Incredible," he said.

The Republican politician said he was "solving the problem" of the non-payment of UN contributions by some countries "very easily."

"If they come to Trump and tell him, I will make everyone pay, like I did with NATO," he said.

"All I need to do is call these countries, they will send me a check within minutes," said President Trump.

According to Politico, President Trump did not say whether the United States would repay its debt to the United Nations.

It is known that President Trump has repeatedly voiced harsh criticism of the United Nations, accusing it of using funds ineffectively and not doing enough to end conflicts.
