JAKARTA - A fire burned down four semi-permanent houses and three stalls on Jalan Pedongkelan Belakang, RT 03/RW 14, Cengkareng Timur Village, Cengkareng District, West Jakarta, Saturday, January 31 in the early hours. There were no casualties in the incident, but three families with a total of 12 people lost their homes.

Head of the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat) Suheri said the fire was suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in one of the buildings.

"The suspected cause of the fire is due to electrical phenomena or short circuit," said Suheri when confirmed in Jakarta, Saturday, January 31.

According to Suheri, the fire report was received by officers at 04.47 WIB. However, based on the information from residents, the fire was seen to have grown around 04.30 WIB from one of the stalls that stored used plastic.

Residents then reported the incident to the Jakarta Emergency Service Siaga 112, which was immediately forwarded to the nearest Gulkarmat Unit.

Officers began extinguishing at 04.53 WIB by deploying 13 fire trucks and 65 personnel. The fire was successfully controlled before spreading wider to the dense settlements around it.

As of Saturday morning, officers were still cooling to ensure that there were no fire points that could potentially trigger a follow-up fire. Related units also conducted data collection on residents affected by the fire.
