Review SMPN 1 Karang Baru, Vice President Serap School Needs After Aceh Floods

JAKARTA - Vice President (Wapres) Gibran Rakabuming Raka has reviewed SMP Negeri 1 Karang Baru in Aceh Tamiang Regency, Aceh, to ensure that the process of restoring educational facilities and teaching and learning activities is back on track after the flash flood on November 26, 2025.

The Vice President arrived at Aceh Tamiang, Friday, to see the physical condition of the school, which had previously suffered damage to almost all major facilities, especially the learning and supporting rooms on the ground floor, including classrooms, UKS, laboratories, mushalla, teachers' rooms, school principals' rooms, and administrative rooms.

All tables, chairs, and whiteboards were also severely damaged and have not yet been made available, so that at the beginning of the post-disaster school, the teaching and learning process was carried out communally by combining students from three classes in several rooms that could still be used.

The flooding that hit the area had a significant impact on school activities. Of the total 698 students, 665 students were affected by the flood. The same condition was also experienced by educators and educators, where 67 out of 71 teachers and staff also felt the impact of the disaster.

As conditions improve, since January 28, 2026, learning has been shifted to nine classrooms with a gradual integration of students and adjustments to teaching schedules by each teacher.

In accordance with President Prabowo's instructions, the Vice President emphasized that the state was present to ensure that children's rights to education were still met, while also encouraging the acceleration of the recovery of educational facilities and infrastructure after the disaster.

The Vice President also absorbed various urgent needs needed to support learning and teaching activities, including the availability of whiteboards, tables, and chairs for students; learning devices such as laptops and uniforms for teachers; and school administration devices in the form of computers and printers.

Before leaving the school, the Vice President said that he would order that the procurement of tables and chairs be accelerated.

"The Vice President will accelerate the procurement of furniture (tables, chairs, and boards) in our schools," said the Head of SMP N 1 Karang Baru, Edi Wahyudi, quoted by Antara.

Edi also said that the Vice President emphasized that he would accelerate coordination for the restoration of school buildings.

"Mas Wapres will coordinate the recovery process to the maximum," said Edi.

The review is part of the government's commitment to ensure that the recovery of the education sector is in line with handling the impact of disasters, so that learning activities can resume optimally and sustainably.

Present to accompany the Vice President in this review were the Regent of Aceh Tamiang Armia Pahmii, Head of the National Agency for Disaster Management Acceleration (BNPB) Suharyanto, Minister of Empowerment of Women and Child Protection (PPPA) Arifah Fauzi, and Director General of Regional Administrative Development of the Ministry of Home Affairs Safrizal ZA.
