JAKARTA - The United States Ambassador to the United Nations told the Security Council, the Gaza Strip (Palestine) will be completely demilitarised through a negotiation process that includes the disarmament of Hamas and an internationally funded buyback programme.
Ambassador Mike Waltz told the council that Hamas must not have any role in the future government of Gaza, "directly or indirectly, in any form".
"All military and offensive terror infrastructure, including tunnels and weapons production facilities, will be destroyed and not rebuilt," he said, launching The National (29/1).
Waltz, who is also President Donald Trump's National Security Adviser, said international and independent monitors would "oversee the process of demilitarizing Gaza, which includes permanently placing weapons outside of use through a disarmament process agreed to and supported by an internationally funded buyback and reintegration program".
"The United States, together with the 26 countries that have joined the Peace Council, and in consultation with the Palestinian National Committee that it oversees, will put pressure on Hamas to disarm," Waltz said.
President Trump said the Peace Council would deal with Hamas disarmament, the deployment of international security forces, the withdrawal of more Israeli troops, and the reconstruction of Gaza.
Previously, the Security Council in November voted in favor of a US-backed plan for Gaza that authorized international stabilization forces (ISF).
Waltz said the new force would begin operations under the leadership of US Army Major General Jasper Jeffers and would seek to establish "control and stability" to allow Israeli forces to withdraw from the area based on "standards, milestones, and timelines associated with demilitarization".
This will be agreed upon, he added, between the Israeli military, the new forces, the guarantors, and the US.
