JAKARTA - Member of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives Habib Syarief urges the police to prioritize a restorative justice approach in handling the case of reporting a teacher in Pamulang, South Tangerang.

Habib made this appeal in response to a case of a teacher who was reported by a student's parents to the police after giving advice to his students not to easily surrender.

"We are concerned about the proliferation of teachers reporting to the police on allegations of verbal violence that are not necessarily proven. Advising students is the task of educators. Why should educational action be answered by a police report? Cases like this should be resolved through dialogue, not criminal," said Habib in Jakarta, Wednesday, January 28.

According to Habib, educational actions such as giving advice are part of the responsibility of the teacher profession and should not lead to criminalization or criminal legal proceedings.

He highlighted the position of teachers, who he considered increasingly vulnerable, because they are often faced with excessive legal threats over issues that occur in the school environment.

Habib assessed that the restorative justice approach was the fairest solution to restore the relationship between teachers, students, and parents, without damaging the educational climate.

"Don't let teachers teach in a climate of fear. If teachers continue to be overshadowed by the threat of law, their concentration and psychology will be disturbed, and ultimately the quality of national education will be affected," he said.

In addition, Habib encouraged schools to be more serious in instilling the values of manners and ethics to students and building a commitment with parents.

According to him, schools need to have a strong internal problem-solving mechanism so that small problems do not immediately spread to the legal realm.

It is known that the case of reporting the teacher began with an incident in the classroom in August 2025. Although the school has facilitated two mediations between the teacher and the parents of the students, an agreement has not been reached until it continues to the legal process.

Habib emphasized that maintaining the dignity and sense of security of teachers is an important part of efforts to maintain the future of Indonesian education.
