JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has resumed weather modification operations (OMC) on the 11th day as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall.
The implementation of the 11th OMC was carried out through two sorties using the CASA 212 A-2105 aircraft based at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. Cloud seeding was directed to a number of water areas which were considered potentially triggering heavy rain in Jakarta.
"The seeding location is around the North Jakarta Waters, the Bekasi Waters in West Java, and the Banten Waters, with a height of around 8,500 feet to 11,000 feet and carrying a total salt of 1,600 kilograms in two flights," said Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial BPBD Isnawa Adji in his statement, Monday, January 26.
The first batch was carried out in the morning with the DKI Jakarta meteorological OMC mission. Cloud seeding was carried out in the overhead area of South Tangerang at an altitude of 5,000 to 7,000 feet. The seeding area is at a radial of 210-280 degrees with a distance of 10-30 nautical miles from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport.
In this first flight, the seeding material used was Calcium Oxide (CaO) with a weight of 800 kilograms. The seeding was carried out to control the growth of rain clouds that could potentially move to the Jakarta mainland.
The second batch was carried out during the day with a focus on the overhead area of the Java Sea. Flights were carried out at altitudes of 8,000 to 12,000 feet with sowing areas at radial 030-060 degrees and a distance of 30-50 nautical miles from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport.
In this second sorti, the seeding material used was Sodium Chloride (NaCl) with a weight of 800 kilograms. The seeding was directed to clouds that were considered safe to reduce the intensity of rain in the water area.
Isnawa said that the implementation of the 11th OMC was part of the anticipatory steps of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government in facing the potential for high rainfall that is still likely to occur in the next few days.
"This 11th day weather modification operation is an early mitigation step to reduce the risk of extreme weather impacts, especially heavy rain that has the potential to cause flooding and flooding," said Isnawa.
"The implementation of OMC is carried out based on the analysis of atmospheric conditions and continuous weather monitoring, so that cloud seeding can be directed to safer areas," he continued.
In addition, Isnawa appealed to the public to remain vigilant against the potential for moderate to heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning, thunder, and strong winds, and to play an active role in maintaining environmental cleanliness and water channels to minimize the risk of flooding and flooding.
